August 7 – of a quiet mind

August 7 - of a quiet mind

Worry is the mind’s own personal treadmill. The simulator of infinite unforeseen pitfalls that exhausts both mind and body all without actually going anywhere. We’re right where we started, and have been here all along. Jesus pierces the unending stress-assault with simplicity and calm. He quiets our minds with the promise of enough; always enough. Never the whole race, yet always the next step. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” ~ Luke 12:23-26 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. July 31 – Addition by Subtraction

July 31 - Addition by Subtraction

Message: Addition by Subtraction (Josh Hatcher) Who are you? Behind the disguises, the masks that we put on to present some sterilized, amped-up version of ourselves we want other people to see; who’s underneath? This message scrapes away some of that plaster, and uncovers the in-process, grace-stained, beloved child of God that’s hidden underneath… Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… Children’s Message (Joel Ripke) “Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’” ~ Luke 12:15 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. July 24 – Prayer in the King’s English

July 24 - Prayer in the King's English

“Lord, teach us to pray.” It’s not so much a question of method, or the proper choosing of words. The disciples wonder is about something far greater. What posture do we take toward the God of all Creation? What social protocol, what unwritten rules do we follow when we dare to talk to God? Jesus answers, as He often does, with Symbol. Imagery to calm the anxious mind and free us to walk intimately with God our Creator, our Redeemer, our Friend. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” ~ Luke 11:1 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. May 15 – Calm Chaos

May 15 - Calm Chaos

Jesus stands in the midst of utter chaos and brings calm. Sometimes. If your life is anything like mine, chaos is more of a constant, like you’re laying down tracks with a train rolling full-steam ten yards behind you. Chaos never stops, and though Christ doesn’t always calm that chaos, He often pierces through it, letting everything other than Himself fade into the background. This message takes a hard look at our priorities, the way we determine what’s really important to us, and is itself a prayer to the God the Holy Spirit to re-align those priorities with the Cross of Jesus squarely in the center. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: ‘Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only 9:00 in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”‘” ~ Acts 2:14-17a ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. May 8 – Culture War

May 8 - Culture War

By considering the world our enemy; the singular evil that threatens the Church and her values, we miss two of God’s most gracious gifts. We miss all that’s good and beautiful about His Creation, and what’s more, we miss the opportunity to be what’s good and beautiful within that Creation. This message explores the relationship between faithful Christians and the world around us, and moves us to understand our place, not as enemies of the world, but leaven for the world. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.” ~ Acts 1:8-9 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. May 1 – Guidance

May 1 - Guidance

There’s no such thing as a self-taught Christian. Knowing God, trusting God, following in the way of Jesus, everything we think of as faith and belief; we’re taught all of it by the inner teacher, the Holy Spirit who lives with us and within us. This message digs around in the promises Jesus makes to His disciples and to us as well. Promises that we will never be alone. He will always be with us, always lead, and always guide. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, adn we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.” ~ John 14:23-27 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry

April 24 – The Next Conversion

April 24 - The Next Conversion

Conversion isn’t just a one-time experience. Every day we grow closer to the heart of Jesus; every hour His Spirit leads us to die to ourselves and be raised again to follow Him. This message explores the next conversion of Peter, and the outward movement of grace that transcends our tribal tendencies. Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God doesn’t show partiality. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.” ~ Acts 10:34-35 ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. April 17 - The Art of Listening

How do you know the voice of Jesus? Follow along with this week’s sermon notes… “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. April 3 – The Ripple Effect

April 3 - The Ripple Effect

Toss a stone into a lake and watch what happens! A series of ever-widening concentric circles spread out from the center, further and further away; farther and farther apart. This is what’s called “The Ripple Effect.” This message takes a look at the biggest splash in the history of the world, and how those ripples have affected all Christians in all places and at all times. ________________________________ About the Preacher Douglas Morrison has served as Deacon at Trinity Lutheran Church since 2012, where he is active in preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and liturgy. March 27 – Madness!

March 27 - Madness!

Reality Check – n. when something that seems wonderful at first turns out not to be in the real world. At some point another, we all have a reality check experience with our spirituality. When that faith that once seemed so awesome turns out not to be as magical as we’d once hoped. That’s usually when the Risen Jesus brings us through death, through disappointment, into the calm, “new normal” of His accessible life. ________________________________ About the Preacher Josh Hatcher is a devoted husband and father, hopeless wonder-junkie, and the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church – an open and caring, distinctly Lutheran, deeply sacramental and sometimes eclectic ministry in the heart of Downtown Memphis. March 25 – Weakness

March 25 - Weakness

Everyone wants to be close to Jesus. Until they’re pointed to the guy having a panic attack in the Garden. Or they’re handed a cross and told, “Here, carry this for a minute. This way. Follow me.” On Good Friday, Jesus bears the full weight of our humanity. He also says to you who are going through your own little piece of hell, “Take a look. I’ve been there, too.” This message brings us next to the Jesus who brings Himself next to us.
